Avalanche hits Badrinath

A significant avalanche occurred near Mana village in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on the morning of February 28, 2025, affecting a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) labor camp situated between Mana and Badrinath. The avalanche buried 57 workers who were engaged in road construction activities. Rescue operations have successfully extricated 16 individuals, three of whom have been transported to a military hospital for treatment. Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining 41 workers, with adverse weather conditions posing challenges to the operation. The Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are actively involved in the rescue mission. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is overseeing the situation from the state disaster control room.

The Himalayan region, particularly Uttarakhand, is prone to avalanches, a risk exacerbated by the impacts of global warming. In 2022, a similar incident resulted in the loss of 27 trainee mountaineers in the same area.

Current weather conditions in Badrinath include heavy snowfall, with a red warning for heavy snow in effect until 6:30 PM IST. Residents and visitors are advised to adhere to guidelines issued by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in X post, “Sad news was received about many workers being buried under avalanche during the construction work being carried out near Mana village in Chamoli district. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by ITBP, BRO and other rescue teams. I pray to Lord Badri Vishal for the safety of all the labour brothers.”
